Bon Jovi to Be Named 'Legend of Live' at Billboard Touring Conference & Awards

Iconic rock band Bon Jovi will be named the 2016 Legend of Live by Billboard at the 13th annual Billboard Touring Conference & Awards, a celebratory event dedicated to the live music industry held November 9-10 at the SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills. 

The Legend Of Live award is Billboard's highest accolade in the live entertainment space, recognizing professionalism and steadfast commitment to the art and craft of live performance. It honors artists who have made significant and lasting contributions to the touring business. The Legend Of Live award transcends success at the box office in the current year and recognizes a body of work across a lengthy career.

Bon Jovi, led by the creative and strategic force, Jon Bon Jovi, is a box-office smashing headliner, grossing well over $1 billion in ticket sales around the world in the past decade and ranking as the top touring band in the world three times in six years (a feat accomplished by only one other band in history, the Rolling Stones). As the band prepares to release their fourteenth studio album, This House Is Not for Sale on October 21st (Island/UMG), they are again delivering anthems of integrity and optimism to legions of fans as they have done for over three decades.

Jon Bon Jovi to Be Honored at Clinton Global Citizen Awards

Jon Bon Jovi has played for a lot of major audiences. But the Jersey rocker just booked a major gig on Sept. 19, when he will be honored and a featured performer at this year's Clinton Global Citizen Awards.

The 10th annual event that honors outstanding individuals for their exemplary leadership and work to effect positive social change will take place during the final Clinton Global Initiative meetings in New York (Sept. 19-21). 

This year's meeting celebrates a decade of CGI's philanthropy across the planet and will recognize the 10-year anniversary of the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, whose focus is on issues of affordable housing and hunger in the U.S. The rocker's organization launched at a press conference in Philadelphia, where President Clinton took the stage to commend the philanthropic model.

According to CGI, the list of this year's honorees include President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia for his "commitment to establish peace in Colombia following a 50 year civil war"; Dr. Hawa Abdi for her work to provide "refuge, quality healthcare, education and entrepreneurship opportunities" for all Somalis and Adi Godrej for "transforming his family’s multinational company into a leader of social and environmental value creation."

In addition to Bon Jovi, the event will feature special appearances by opera singer Andrea Bocelli, who will perform with the Voices of Haiti Choir and Sister Mary Scullion, who will present an award to Bon Jovi; Randy Jackson will serve as musical producer for the event.

Some notable past Global Citizen Awards honorees have included: Quincy Jones (2009), Sting and Trudie Styler (2011) and Leonardo DiCaprio (2014).

Hundreds turn out as Bon Jovi receives Marian Anderson Award



Hundreds feted New Jersey-born rock star and philanthropist Jon Bon Jovi at a Kimmel Center gala Tuesday night, where he accepted the Marian Anderson Award for his music and charity work.

The award is given to entertainers who have "contributed to our society in a singular manner," event organizers said. They highlighted Bon Jovi's music and commitment to charity, including his work with programs in the Philadelphia area and beyond.

Bon Jovi took the stage to a standing ovation about 10:30. "I'm deeply humbled to accept this award," he said, "and I do so fully aware of the rich and the powerful legacy of this honor."

The award is named for the late African American contralto and South Philadelphia High School graduate, who was celebrated as a singer of classical music and spirituals and who, when she encountered racial intolerance, gracefully fought for social justice.

Saying he never had to face the struggles Anderson endured, Bon Jovi noted: "I was, in fact, born in suburban New Jersey in 1962."  He exhorted the crowd: "Let us draw inspiration from those that have come before us to do the work we are called to do."

Earlier, a host of celebrities and politicians sang Bon Jovi's praises. The comedian Wanda Sykes said Bon Jovi excels at everything he does: "Music, acting, good hair."

She drew laughs with a reference to Philadelphia's marijuana-decriminalization law: "Thanks to Mayor Nutter, we're all carrying a little bit of weed around with us now."

Later in the evening, Nutter responded: "There's nothing like being called out by Wanda Sykes."

He hailed Bon Jovi as "really just a wonderful man" and a "great artist."

An early no-show was Sen. Cory A. Booker (D., N.J.), a former Newark mayor. "If he was Mayor Booker, he would have been here," Sykes joked.

Booker arrived about 10. Explaining his lateness, he quipped: "I had to save Wanda from a fire backstage."

In a serious vein, Booker said Marian Anderson's groundbreaking 1939 concert at the Lincoln Memorial was a seminal moment in American history.

Of Bon Jovi, Booker said: "It is a true artist who has courage and creativity in their passion."

Sister Mary Scullion of Philadelphia's Project HOME said Bon Jovi "calls us to live out the American dream - to work for what our country can and should be."

Bon Jovi, who rose to prominence with his band, Bon Jovi, in the 1980s, has become known in recent years for his charity work. He chairs the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation, which deals with hunger and homelessness, and has partnered with Project HOME.

Proceeds from Tuesday's gala will support the Young Artist Study Grant Program, which helps high school artists and musicians in financial need. One recipient, violinist Sean Bennett, performed at the gala.

Jon Bon Jovi on the Song That Could Break His 22-Year Oscar Dry Spell

 

The Hollywood Reporter is pleased to offer an exclusive first look at Roadside Attractions' new, roughly four-minute-long featurette highlighting Jon Bon Jovi's song "Not Running Anymore," which can be heard in the new film Stand Up Guys. The melancholy tune was recently nominated for the best original song Golden Globe and included on the short-list from which the Academy's music branch will select five best original score Oscar nominees, the names of which will be revealed Jan. 10.

Jon Bon Jovi is, of course, lead singer in the immensely popular rock band Bon Jovi. Twenty-two years ago, he wrote the song "Blaze of Glory" specifically for Young Guns II. The song was part of his first solo album and it became a phenomenal success, placing No. 1 on the Billboard charts, winning the Globe for best original song and earning an Oscar nomination. (It lost at the 1991 Academy Awards to Stephen Sondheim's "Sooner or Later" from the film Dick Tracy.)
  
In the time since, Bon Jovi has done only one other solo project, largely because he has been so busy with his band. But as he explained in an interview with THR earlier this year, he has been on a "streak of writing" over the past year or so since the band wrapped its last tour -- and it occurred to him that he might attempt another if the right project came along. He was sent the script for Stand Up Guys, a dramedy about three longtime partners-in-crime who reunite for one last night together, and agreed to write a song for it even before any actors had signed on to the effort. Shortly thereafter, Oscar winners Al Pacino, Christopher Walken, and Alan Arkin jumped aboard.

In the featurette -- which cuts between an interview with Bon Jovi, scenes from the film and scenes from the song's music video -- the singer says the track's placement in the film "immediately sets the tone for who these guys are" -- particularly the character played by Pacino, who knows that his best friend, the character played by Walken, has been ordered to kill him in just hours.

Bon Jovi says that he deeply connected with the on-screen trio: "I think it’s telling that I’ve had those same relationships with my band, for example ... I’ve been with the same band for 30 years. I’ve been with the same wife for 30-plus years. I’ve been with the same record company for 30 years. Loyalty, friendship, trust, honor — that’s the foundation on which everything I’ve ever done has been built.”

Who Has The Top Tour?

Bon Jovi, U2, Lady Gaga, AC/DC Among Billboard Touring Awards Finalists

Bon Jovi, U2, AC/DC, Lady Gaga, Brad Paisley, Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift are among the top artists, tours, venues, and live entertainment firms recognized as finalists for the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards, which will be handed out at a special reception in New York on Nov. 4. The awards are primarily based on global box office numbers reported to Billboard Boxscore from Oct. 1, 2009, through Sept. 30, 2010.

The finalists for the Top Tour and Top Draw awards, which acknowledge the top grossing and ticket selling tours, respectively, are the same three global treks: U2's ongoing 360 tour, AC/DC's Black Ice tour, and Bon Jovi's The Circle tour.

Rush, Jack Johnson to Recieve Honors at Billboard Touring Awards

The Top Package award, which goes to the top-grossing tour with three or more artists on the bill throughout its run, is designed to reward synergistic packaging and value offered to consumers. Finalists include Brad Paisley's H2O tour, with such artists as Darius Rucker, Justin Moore, Easton Corbin, Steel Magnolia and Josh Thompson the bill; Tim McGraw's Southern Voice tour, with Lady Antebellum, and Taylor Swift's 2010 tour with Kellie Pickler and Gloriana on board.

The Breakthrough Award goes to the top-grossing artist appearing for the first time among the highest grossing tours that is still in their first decade as a national headlining act. Three artists enjoyed remarkable touring breakthroughs this year: Lady GaGa, Justin Bieber, and Tiesto. Dane Cook, Robin Williams, and Chelsea Handler are finalists for the Top Comedy Tour.

The Top Boxscore award recognizes the highest-grossing single engagement for the time period. Two of the Boxscore finalists are from AC/DC: a three-night, sold-out stand at ANZ Stadium in Sydney and three more sellouts at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne; both were in February. The third finalist for Top Boxscore is the Download Festival Castle Donington in the U.K.

Global concert promoters Live Nation and AEG Live are joined by Sao Paulo promoter Time 4 Fun (T4F) as finalists for the Top Promoter award. T4F is also a finalist, with Chugg Entertainment, Australia, and MCD in the U.K., for the Top Independent Promoter, International, category. Five-time winner Jam Productions in Chicago, 2007 winner C3 Presents in Austin, and New Orleans-based Beaver Productions are finalists for Top Independent Promoter, U.S.

Other than the Boxscore-related awards, the Billboard Touring Awards also includes the Concert Marketing & Promotion Award, determined by a panel of judges, and the Eventful Fans' Choice Award, determined by online voting. Additionally, Rush will be named 2010 Legend Of Live, Jack Johnson will receive the Humanitarian Award, and Yo Gabba Gabba Live! will receive the Creative Content Award.
