MEMPHIS Celebrates 500th Performance On Broadway 12/29

MEMPHIS, winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, celebrates its 500th performance on Wednesday, December 29th at 2pm at the Shubert Theatre. Tony winning book writer Joe DiPietro will be live tweeting from the performance to give fans an inside look into MEMPHIS from his point of view. Follow Joe DiPietro @MemphisBroadway on Twitter to get the inside scoop.

MEMPHIS features a Tony-winning score with music by Bon Jovi's founding member/keyboardist David Bryan and lyrics by Bryan and Joe DiPietro (I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change), who also pens the musical's Tony-winning book. MEMPHIS is based on a concept by the late George W. George (producer of the Tony nominated Bedroom Farce and the film My Dinner With Andre), with direction by Tony nominee Christopher Ashley (Xanadu) and choreography by Sergio Trujillo (Jersey Boys).

MEMPHIS takes place in the smoky halls and underground clubs of the segregated 50's, a young white DJ named Huey Calhoun (Chad Kimball) fell in love with everything he shouldn't: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer (Montego Glover). MEMPHIS is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice, and the music changed forever.

MEMPHIS, the show that's currently blowing the roof off Broadway, stars Tony nominee Chad Kimball (Huey) and Tony Nominee Montego Glover (Felicia) with Derrick Baskin (Gator), J. Bernard Calloway (Delray), James Monroe Iglehart (Bobby), Michael McGrath (Mr. Simmons), and Cass Morgan (Mama) opened on October 19, 2009 at Broadway's Shubert Theatre (225 W. 44th Street). Previews began on September 23rd.

Critically acclaimed MEMPHIS won four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score (David Bryan and Joe DiPietro), Best Book (Joe DiPietro), and Best Orchestrations (David Bryan and Daryl Waters). MEMPHIS won four Drama Desk Awards including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Performance by an Actress (Montego Glover), Outstanding Music (David Bryan) and Outstanding Orchestration (David Bryan and Daryl Waters). MEMPHIS has also won four Outer Critic Circle Awards including Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Score (David Bryan & Joe DiPietro), Outstanding Actress (Montego Glover) and Outstanding Choreography (Sergio Trujillo).

David Richardson of WOR Radio calls MEMPHIS "The biggest hit on Broadway" while Charles Isherwood of the New York Times says, ""David Bryan evokes the powerhouse funk of James Brown, the hot guitar riffs of Chuck Berry, the smooth harmonies of The Temptations, the silken, bouncy pop of the great girl groups of the period." The New York Post raves "Of such thrills, Broadway is made," Newsday calls the show "A smash! An extraordinary show," the Daily News promises that MEMPHIS will "Blast you out the door humming and happy" and NY1's Roma Torre cheers, "MEMPHIS ROCKS!"

MEMPHIS will launch a U. S. national tour in Memphis, TN, beginning in October, 2011 at the Orpheum Theatre (203 South Main Street). Additional cities, dates and casting will be announced at a later date. The national tour will be booked by The Booking Group, contact MerEdith Blair (212) 869-9280 www.thebookinggroup.com.

Tickets for MEMPHIS range from $41.50 to $131.50 (including a $1.50 facility fee). The performance schedule is as follows: Tuesday at 7pm, Wednesday - Saturday evenings at 8pm, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2pm, and Sundays at 3pm. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.Telecharge.com, call 212.239.6200 or visit the Shubert Theatre Box Office (225 West 44th Street).

Jon Bon to Advise President...

Tuesday, December 14, 2010

Obama taps Jon Bon Jovi for new advisory board

Looks like all those years of performing for Democratic candidates has paid off: President Obama is tapping rocker Jon Bon Jovi to serve on a new presidential advisory council.

The White House announced Tuesday that Bon Jovi (or is it just Jovi?) will join the new 25-member White House Council for Community Solutions, a panel established to provide advice on "the best ways to mobilize citizens, nonprofits, businesses and government to work more effectively together to solve specific community needs."

The 2009 Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act established the panel, which also includes eBay CEO John Donahoe and Starbucks Vice President Paula Boggs and Rockefeller Foundation President Judith Rodin.

Jovi, the formerly big-haired rocker, is a well-known Democratic Party supporter who once made a cameo in support of fictional Democratic presidential candidate Matthew Santos on NBC's "West Wing."

More recently, Bon Jovi performed at Obama's inaugural concert and promoted the Obama administration's United We Serve initiative during his recent world tour.

But, on a serious note, the Jon Bon Jovi Soul Foundation has partnered with public and private organizations to help combat homelessness. The efforts have yielded more than 260 units of affordable housing for low income individuals and families, according to his spokeswoman.

Obama has tapped several other celebrities to serve on presidential commissions and councils. Yo-Yo Ma and Sarah Jessica Parker are on the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, for example.

The Votes are In...

And our boys did NOT make the Hall of Fame this year. Maybe next year guys!

Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits Inducted Into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The votes are in and next year's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class will include Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Tom Waits, Darlene Love and Dr. John. Leon Russell will be receive The Award For Musical Excellence (formerly the sideman category) and industry legends Jac Holzman and Art Rupe will both receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award. The ceremony will be held March 14 at New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel and it will be broadcast live on Fuse.

Artists are eligible for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 25 years after the release of their first single or LP. All of this year's inductees, however, started in the 1960s — with the lone exception of Tom Waits, who released his first LP Closing Time in 1973.

Dr. John, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Was 'Surprised' By the News

Love feels that the long wait was well worth it. "I was on my way to Atlantic City in a limo when I got the call," she says. "I started screaming and I thought, 'I sure hope the driver doesn't think that my husband's trying to kill me.' I was laughing and crying at the same time."

Darlene Love, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Says She's on Cloud Nine

The ceremony falls right in the middle of Neil Diamond's Australian tour in March. Nothing is set yet, but Diamond hopes to re-shuffle some dates so he can make it. "I'll get in somehow," he says. "They are working on the details right now. I 'm very hopeful it'll work out because I don't want to miss this ... Any club that has Chuck Berry and Little Richard and The Everly Brothers is a club that I want to be a part of."

Neil Diamond, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Says He Feels 'Very Lucky'

When Alice Cooper got the news he immediately called his former bandmates in the original Alice Cooper band. "I said 'Well, remember when we started in high school?" he says. "Here we are. It only took 45 years."

Alice Cooper, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee, Was 'Elated' When He Got the News

Cooper plans on performing with the band, something he's only done a handful of times since they broke up in 1976. "We're trying to figure out if we do 'School's Out,' do we send balloons of confetti into the audience?" he says. "I doubt there'll be a snake there though...If you look at the list of past inductees it's all of my heroes, from Pete Townshend to The Yardbirds to The Beatles to The Stones. It's everybody that we listened to in order to become Alice Cooper, so it's pretty amazing that those are the same people that actually voted for us."

Review: Bon Jovi - Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane...

Bon Jovi joins rock royalty in huge fortnight of international gigs for Brisbane

THERE'S nothing complicated about the Bon Jovi formula: fist-pumping anthems, loads of sha-la-la's, sing-with-mes, hand claps and simple positive messages.

Add the magic ingredient of frontman Jon Bon Jovi - doesn't dance as well as Mick Jagger but makes women feel weak at the knees - plus the guitar heroics of Richie Sambora and it's music made for blasting from car radios in the suburbs.

It plays out pretty well in a place like Suncorp as well, which they played to a sold-out crowd on Tuesday night.

It is music that reaches out to people in the farthest rows and implores them to have a good time.

Their music has proved far more durable than most of their contemporaries from the '80s.
Like their haircuts, their songwriting has improved over the years and they can now deliver a set with sturdy newer tunes like Lost Highway and It's My Life.

This is mostly meat-and-potatoes rock-n-roll but for variety?

There is a U2-ish new song in When We Were Beautiful and they do a rollicking cover of The Rolling Stone's Start Me Up.

It's a big show with a vast video screen and semi-circular ramp in front of the stage to allow the frontman to get closer to the adoring masses.

Bon Jovi are touring on the back of a new greatest hits release and that's what they gave the crowd with songs from every part of their 26-year career.

The lyrics tell the story: "We weren't born to follow, I'll sleep when I'm dead, Anyone want to party?"

Compared with U2's shows last week there's not much nuance and no emotional clout, and no one but me in this crowd seemed to mind.

Bon Jovi: Billboard's Top Touring Act of the Year...

Friday, December 10, 2010

Since 1986, only two bands have claimed the honor as the top-grossing act twice in three years: the Rolling Stones (1998 and 1999) and the Grateful Dead (1991 and 1993).

But this year, another act can claim that title: Bon Jovi.

For the second time in three years, Bon Jovi ranks as the highest-grossing touring act. The band's achievement, this year and previously in 2008, demonstrates that, remarkably, the group is hitting its touring peak 26 years after releasing its debut album.

Ranking at No. 1 on the year-end Top 25 Tours chart with the Circle trek carries more cachet with the industry than with fans, Jon Bon Jovi acknowledges.

"It's funny, because there's obviously a part of you that's very proud of it," says the singer, calling from Japan following the band's two sellout shows at the Tokyo Dome. "In the industry it means something; it doesn't mean anything to the public. But in the industry, all your peers are going to look at it. They're going to see some kind of year-end charts for everything: albums, singles, touring. It's a very nice industry asterisk, for sure. U2 are paying attention."

Bon Jovi says fans don't come to shows because the band is the top touring act. "They come to see it because they've seen it before and they're willing to spend their disposable dollars," he says, adding that the band doesn't set out to top the Boxscore charts. "You can't think about it. In order to break records you have to just do it to satisfy the need."

In an ongoing global trek promoted by AEG Live that saw the band play stadiums and arenas, Bon Jovi reported Boxscore grosses for the period of Nov. 20, 2009, through Nov. 28, 2010, of $146,507,388 and attendance of 1,591,154 to 69 sellouts. When Bon Jovi was tops for the year in 2008 with its Lost Highway tour, the trek finished with a gross of $210 million, the 10th-biggest of all time.

"The biggest thing to remember about this tour is that having a great plan executed by an amazing team delivers the results," says band co-manager Paul Korzilius, who has worked Bon Jovi's tours since the band's earliest headlining days. "What it comes down to is Bon Jovi has always delivered on the promise of an incredible live show and has always remained current with records and their singles. And the customer, who we love, responds."

The 2010-11 trek is AEG Live's third outing with Bon Jovi, following the Have a Nice Day tour in 2005-06 and the Lost Highway tour in 2007-08, which grossed a combined $342 million and moved 3 million tickets worldwide, according to Billboard Boxscore.

"I joke with Jon: 'Bon Jovi is the gift that keeps on giving to us promoters,' " AEG Live CEO Randy Phillips says. "Bon Jovi is like our U2, that anchor client. [Live Nation promotes U2's global tours.] A lot of times when a company is on their third tour with an act, it loses some of the sparkle of the first tour in terms of enthusiasm and attention to detail. In this case, it only intensifies. I credit that to the band's work ethic and to Paul's ability to work with an organization and get the most out of it. The bottom line is when a band is as loyal to a company as they are to us, we owe that back to them in spades."

The current tour could be considered Bon Jovi's most ambitious, at least for the modern era, Korzilius says. "But Bon Jovi got to where they are by great music [being] performed live, and that has meant touring, touring, touring on a worldwide basis since the beginning," he says.

Bon Jovi agrees that the tour might be the band's most ambitious in a while, at least in terms of its length and scope. "Lost Highway was, I believe, a 100-show tour, and we'd gotten accustomed to that 100-show kind of a run," he says. "This will probably be 140 shows all told, so it is a bit ambitious. But when Paul and I sat with the calendar, it's paced in a way that's very doable."

The basic routing of the Circle tour began with a pair of dates on Feb. 19 and 20 at KeyArena in Seattle, followed by runs through North America, Spain and Holland-and a 12-night stand at the O2 Arena in London that grossed more than $18 million. Then it was back home in July to finish a four-sellout stand at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., that, combined with the run's first three shows in May, took in more than $21 million and drew 200,000-plus fans.

Sing Along with Jon Bon Jovi...

As long as Bon Jovi exist, there will always be stadium rock.

Critics may proclaim it a dying "art", but Jon Bon Jovi and tens of thousands of adoring fans at their opening Australian concert in Perth on Wednesday night haven't heard the death knell.

The American rockers have survived bad hair and pop culture's bad moods and tantrums to remain one of the most successful acts of the past three decades.

After witnessing their opening night on The Circle tour, their secret to longevity is revealed.

It's the hits and the man who sings them.

Try not singing along to Livin' on a Prayer - it's impossible. Or It's My Life, Bad Medicine, Wanted Dead Or Alive, Always.

Even if you are not a Bon Jovi fan, those songs have wormed their way into your memory courtesy of jukeboxes, backyard barbecues and supermarkets.

Jon Bon Jovi himself is a rock music conductor as much as he is a singer, songwriter and musician. Armed with a megawatt smile, he plays the audience as much as the songs, urging them on with "Are you still with me?" and constructing all the right moments for them to raise their voices.

It's part medicine show, part revivalist church with the latest concert video technology to help even those in the nosebleed seats to get a front seat view.

Before the show, Bon Jovi said he can't see himself trying to raise the Rolling Stones' bar and continue touring for the next two decades.

"I can't see me being 68 and running around that stadium stage. I have to get a hobby," he said.

Jon Bon Jovi also revealed that the band would perform a medley of their hits during Oprah Winfrey's Sydney shows.

The band have flown into Melbourne in their private jet.

Review: Bon Jovi @ Subiaco Stadium, Perth Australia...

Bon Jovi kick off their Australian tour

BON Jovi opened their tour Down Under with the ubiquitous Blaze of Glory last night in Perth.

The seasoned performers are expert at keeping the stadium masses at fever pitch with a balanced set of the anthems and the freshly baked, so fans don't have to suffer an indulgent block of the new stuff to get the old stuff.

When We Were Beautiful is backed up by It's My Life and Bad Medicine is mashed with Shout. Bon Jovi know how to work the crowd like a conductor - when to get the singalongs and the overhead clapalongs going.

The enduring rockers - who join a megastar line-up of tours here including U2, The Eagles, Muse and Linkin Park - delivered three decades of hits, which have seen the band sell more than 100 million albums worldwide.
Jon Bon Jovi revealed exclusively to The Daily Telegraph just before taking the stage that the band will also preform a medley of their hits during Oprah Winfrey's Sydney shows.

While much has been made of U2's "claw" staging, Bon Jovi have brought state-of-the-art video technology and a circular catwalk for their Circle tour.

The frontman said he valued the loyalty of the band's Australian fans, but said the New Jersey rockers had almost run out of venues to play across the world.

"We haven't played Greece or Israel; they're two places I'd like to take the band," Jon Bon Jovi said.

Bon Jovi will perform an 'intimate" gig for about 1500 fans at Star City on December 15 and then open a three-night stand at the Sydney Football Stadium on December 17.

Rock Star Baby in the US!

Monday, November 29, 2010

Drummer to Designer: Bon Jovi’s Tico Torres Dishes on His Kids Collection

For the children of rock stars, pink and blue just doesn’t cut it.

So when Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres and his pals started having babies a few years back, he decided to make a line of gear just for them, aptly called rockstarbaby.

“It was all just pink and blue, and I thought, ‘I can’t relate to this!’ ” Torres recalls.

“So I decided to do something with clean white and black — it’s sharper, with more of a hip attitude. I figure parents dress themselves up, so why not have children look that way as well?”

The rocker opened a store in New York City’s trendy NoHo neighborhood in 2000, and shuttered it not too long after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

He then began selling the line exclusively in Europe, and now, has triumphantly returned to the United States via a web store at rockstarbaby.com.

Torres designs all the looks himself, then sends them off to London, where his production team works their magic, turning his sketches into sleek, high-end goods.

While designing baby gear might seem like a funny side job for a rock star, for Torres, it’s just natural.
“I grew up with a family of seamstresses,” he tells PEOPLE Moms & Babies. “I’d cut patterns with my grandma, she’d design them and sew them up. My stage costumes from the 1960s to 1990s were handmade.”

Torres is passing that eye for design down to his son, Hector, 6½, too. “He’s worn all the stuff, and he thinks it’s cool. It gives him a little attitude — good attitude,” the drummer says. “I always listen to what he says. I think that the comfort is the first thing, so it’s worth finding the best cottons.”

Torres is also careful of seam placement — “It’s babies, you want to be sure they’re not irritated!” — and uses safe dyes. “At the end of the day you can keep washing them, especially the blacks and dark colors, and know they’re not going to fade after three washes.”

Aside from onesies, hats, T-shirts and shoes, Torres sells pacifiers, bottles, cups, plates and other gift-like items, too. “There’s a little black duck that’s so cute, it has a skull and crossbones on the tail,” he says. The edgy pattern is seen throughout much of the line, which covers ages 0 to 6 years and runs from about $10 to $100.

“I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel here,” Torres says, laughing. “But you design for what your lifestyle is about. And right now, I think parents are hipper than they’ve ever been. And that should be reflected in their kids’ clothes.”

Happy Thanksgiving...

Wednesday, November 24, 2010

Though the words aren't mine, the sentiment is.  I could never have been so eloquent.  To all my friends that celebrate the holiday tomorrow, Happy Thanksgiving...

This Thanksgiving holiday with its blessings so grand Should serve to remind us of the joys at hand The friendships we treasure, our families dear The love we've been given and shared, year to year The food at our tables, where many have none The dawn of each morning beneath the bright sun The dreams that we carry; the warmth in our hearts That bring us together when we are apart.

The walks by the lakeshore as stars light the sky The joys in the children who quickly pass by The stillness of nature, the comforts of home Each blessing the greatest that could ever be known The warm, pleasured scents from the kitchen, delight Arousing the senses near the firelight The wondrous decor of the season to come Good tidings, best wishes for everyone.

The freedom we hold, so to live peacefully The soldiers who serve us, so diligently The air that we breathe, the flowers we grow The brightness of spring, the coldness of snow Our sons and daughters, our husbands and wives And the furry creatures who capture our lives –All are blessings we’re given to cherish, always Yet, especially so on Thanksgiving Day.

Celebrate this time for the beauty abound Be thankful for all of the blessings you've found For in the end, blessed you will truly be – A soul filled with love, peace and harmony Happy Thanksgiving, my friends; I am blessed, indeed I am thankful for the love you have shared, selflessly May each road that you travel be paved with a smile Have a wonderful holiday....enjoyed in style!

Greatest Hits - Worldwide Smash...

Bon Jovi a Worldwide Smash

Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits has debuted at Number 1 around the world and on the Billboard European Chart with their three-decade spanning retrospective that also includes their latest hit single, 'What Do You Got?'

Underlining their status as one the world's biggest bands, the release is a new Bon Jovi "best," charting higher and selling more copies in its first week than the band's 1994 CROSS ROAD release, which has sold 21.5 million copies to date worldwide.

Bon Jovi Greatest Hits debuted in the Top 5 in over 20 countries around the world including in the US, where it is the #1 charting rock release, the UK, Germany, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, Austria, Holland, New Zealand, Argentina and Korea. The album entered the charts at #1 in Japan, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Sweden, Portugal, and Mexico. The album held at #1 for 2 weeks in Portugal and Ireland and remains at #1 for a second straight week on the European Billboard Album Chart.

But it is not just about the anthemic smash hits that have become Rock staples over the last three decades. The band's latest hit single, 'What Do You Got?' is climbing the charts as the fastest growing radio single in Bon Jovi history.

The band's extensive global campaign started in the UK with a storming X Factor performance and an ITV special in advance of the Greatest Hits release, before closing the MTV EMAs where they were honoured with the first ever Global Icon Award.

About Me

My photo
I am and always have been a Bon Jovi fan. This blog is just my obsession taken a step further, my imagination in high gear if you will. I love to read and decided to see what would happen when I took that love of the written word and ramped it up a bit.
